DownsThe John Downs House on North Street was the Milford Preservation Trust’s first success story. The house and the acreage behind it were purchased for development, with a proposal made to demolish the structure and replace it with six modern houses. The MPT and the City of Milford, with the help of a grant from the State of Connecticut, saved the property from demolition. The taxpayers were later repaid with the sale of some of the land.

The house remains, safe but empty, and one important goal of the MPT is to begin restoration of the interior. The Trust, in consultation with the city, also plans to gather ideas plans for the future use of the home of Milford’s 18th century diarist.
